Announcing Quick Poll Results! Irvine Wants to Ban Cell Phones from the City Council Dais

A word cloud of responses from the survey.

On March 22, the Irvine City Council approved a series of changes to public comment and meeting protocols. Councilmember Agran mentioned the discussion did not include a ban on cell phone use at the dais, which he supports wholeheartedly.

Councilmember Larry Agran suggests the Irvine City Council should ban the use of electronics from the dais to ensure the Council pays attention to residents and constituents.

Last week, Larry conducted a poll to hear from YOU. We asked:

  • Do you believe cell phones should be banned from the dais?

  • What is the role of the City Council during public meetings?

Here is what we heard from you:

  • Banning cell phones on the dais:

“Absolutely. It is so rude and sets a terrible example”

“Yes. Their use gives the impression that council members are uninterested.”

“Yes. [Our] focus should be on the people.”

  • Regarding the role of the City Council:

“To listen to the public and engage in good-faith discussion.”

“Listen to citizen ideas, weigh merits, and make good decisions.”

“To hear others and focus on [the City’s] business at hand!”

Our office will keep you informed of ways to participate in Irvine’s meetings. Thank you for your participation in our government and issues.
